Pre-season training camp at VfB Bad Mergentheim—two intense days in summer-like temperatures
At the invitation of Tejesh, a young Nepalese student, I had the opportunity to lead a two-day preseason training camp at VfB Bad Mergentheim.
We connected in a rather unique way: Tejesh had been training at the AVM School in Kathmandu last December, where he got in touch with me. This eventually led to the invitation to Bad Mergentheim, where I had the opportunity to support the club’s players as they prepared for the upcoming season.
Despite the very high summer temperatures, the 14 motivated players were not deterred. For two days, they trained with focus and great dedication at six tables. The program included a total of about ten hours of table tennis training—including intensive sessions with the ball bucket.
The camp focused not only on physical and technical preparation for the season. My main goal was to provide the players with new ideas and practical tips for their training during the season. In doing so, I tried to address each player individually and offer advice that would help them further develop their own game and personal skill level.
After Saturday’s practice, we also had time to get to know Bad Mergentheim a little better. On a stroll through the beautiful old town, we visited, among other places, the historic pharmacy, the castle, and the spa gardens. Fittingly, Bad Mergentheim is celebrating 200 years as a spa town this year.
After a long and intense day of training, there was, of course, plenty of time for socializing. We wrapped up Saturday evening with a cozy barbecue hosted by a player from VfB Bad Mergentheim. It was a wonderful opportunity to chat and get to know each other better away from the table tennis tables.
On Sunday, we headed back to the gym—and once again, all the players were present and highly motivated. I was particularly impressed that, despite the heat, no one complained. Everyone gave it their all until the very end and consistently followed through with the training program.
As a farewell, a lovely surprise awaited me: as a thank-you, I received several bottles of local wine as well as a table tennis racket signed by the participants—a great memento of this weekend.
After two intense days, I can only say: It was really a lot of fun! The motivation, the dedication, and the pleasant atmosphere within the group made the camp a special experience.
A big thank you to Tejesh, all the players, and VfB Bad Mergentheim for the invitation, the hospitality, and two great days of table tennis. I wish all the players a successful season—and maybe we’ll meet again at the table someday!
